I am sure there are far more qualified people are answer this than me; however, an AWS evangelist told me that Amazon uses a lot of tools to search for these kind of things. It's not the best answer. Happened to us when we were at Rackspace when we paid for the bandwidth we used over 100GB. We were presented with a large bill because a server we had already stopped using got hacked and used to send a ton of spam.
