Cloud Cafe #41 Canonical Cloud Talk With Simon Wardley
By John | September 9, 2009
In this second podcast Simon, (Simon Wardley), gets even with me for last weeks football antics. He makes me come up with a list of American characteristics. This leads us into a lengthy discussion of why the British love to queue. Oh yeah, we also talk about clouds a bit…
- Benefits of cloud computing
- Risks of cloud computing
- Yak Shaving
- The risk of doing nothing (The cloud)
- Standards have to be based on an open source reference model!
- The rise of the computer utility (Douglas Parkhill 1966)
- The standards wars
- Hype of the week
I wanted to add a special thanks to Florence Neal for the artwork and Mike Colletti for the music. If you find any of their works interesting, please feel free to link their sites and contact them directly.

Thanks for these podcasts, they’re interesting listening! I’ve only just found out about Cloud Cafe through Simon’s blog post, but it’s a good listen on the commute into work.
The talk about the need for open standards and reference implementations was interesting. What are your opinions on Eucalyptus following the de facto proprietary API controlled by Amazon? While it’s likely to stay for the immediate future, does the lack of control over the standard concern you?
Also, could you please look at the relative volume levels between Simon and John? I found myself regularly reaching for the volume buttons during conversations! Thanks.
