Things that make me go Huh #008?

By John | September 5, 2007

Last week, I read a lot of news articles about how IBM doesn’t track vacation time. On the surface, this story makes IBM seem very innovative. Doing the math at about $150 per hour per FTE, however, I come up with around $2 billion a year if everyone at IBM decides to take an extra week of vacation. Okay, I agree that this contentious calculation is a bit silly, but not so silly is the question of how can IBM record its R&D tax credits without accounting for a $2-billion dollar swing (plus or minus a week of vacation time)? For a company that turns hydrogen atoms into transistors, IBM would seem to be able to track vacation time.
