40 Days of Rag on ValleyWag #6 - Hookernomics vs. Freakonmics?
By John | March 15, 2008
Why do Hookers live with their parents? “Old Sweaty” does that question make any sense to you? Of course not.
I guess I find it mildly ironic that a wretched hooker like “Old Sweaty” would be making fun of a person like Sudhir Venkatesh. In the grand scheme of things barking at Scobel and being envious of Arrington’s girl friend doesn’t really amount to a hill of beans. I have also met Jimmy Wales and there is some “viggle” room there as well. However, when Melissa Gira Grant (a.k.a “Old Sweaty”) starts commenting on Sudhir Venkatesh I think of the scene in the Big Lebowski where John Goodman is yelling at Donnie telling him he is out of his element. I think also that “Old Sweaty” is like a child walking into this conversation on her recent blog post. It really isn’t a fair comparison, she is just a hooker and he is a Harvard Fellow. How could she have ever known of some of the really cool things Venkatesh has done prior to him showing up on her Gmail as a Google Alert. I mean one of the other valleyraggers might have caught this fau paus however she is probably working without a net - ropes maybe. Even the “rag” should pay Sudhir Venkatesh a modicum of respect. How many times have you taken six years of your life to follow your passion in a dangerous Chicago project. But how could “Old Sweaty” ever know this. Venkatesh is just a string that she saw in some email post that encroached her beloved “Hooker Economics” (a.k.a Hookernomics). She is to busy saving the wales by trying to distinguish the economics between 4k per night hooker and 20kper night hookers.
However, this my friends s the heart and soul of my 40rag project. Basically if I add a blog into my Google Reader it is because I usually believe the author(s) are smarter than me. I don’t consider myself a very sophisticated and well read person however I have a low-level expectation that the bloggers that I read are. I would like my bloggers to be basically familiar with authors like, Friedman, Gladwell, Collins, Anderson,… you get the point - not you “Old Sweaty”. I even give out bonus points if someone understands the managerial differences between a train wreck like Jack Welch and a master like Gerstner. Additional smiley’s are given for any vague references to Eco, Pynchon or Napoleon Hill. Truth be know I had to read Foucault’s Pendulum twice and I have long given up on Gravity’s Rainbow. I am just not that smart. However, here is the point, I think it is way cool when my favorite bloggers are that smart.
Since the valleyrag team is ignoring my plea to shit-can her butt and l still want to read the “rag” I have come up with a plan. I have created a semester’s worth of reading for “Old Sweaty” and here it is:
Built to Last by Jim Collins
Surely you will be able to relate to this one.
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Actually on second thought I am giving you life experience on this one.
Everybody Wins! by Gordon Cain
Shoot.. forget this one as well.
The 4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss
Darn this is turning out to be a lot harder than I thought.
The Long Tail by Chris Anderson
Yikes.. I give up
See the 40Rag series for more-o-fun
