BotchagalupeMarks for April 6th – 05:20
By John | April 7, 2009
These are my links for April 6th from 05:20 to 16:38:
- Last.fm – the Blog · Mapreduce Bash Script – One night at the pub we discussed whether one could replace Hadoop (a massive and comprehensive implementation of Mapreduce) with a single bash script, an awk command, sort, and a sprinkling of netcat. This turned into a weekend project dubbed bashreduce.
- 5 Reasons Why URL Shorteners Are Useful – In an article this week, Delicious (Delicious reviews) founder Joshua Schachter made some very compelling arguments for why URL shorteners might be bad for the web. However, I want to make some points for the opposite argument: that URL shorteners are good for web culture and the growth of the Internet. Here are my top five reasons for why URL shorteners are useful to the web:
- Cloud Musings by Kevin L. Jackson: Former DoT CIO on Cloud Computing – Last month, former Transportation Department CIO Dan Mintz offered his views on cloud computing to Eric Chabrow, Managing Editor of Government Information Security.
- Agile Testing: Experiences deploying a large-scale infrastructure in Amazon EC2 – At OpenX we recently completed a large-scale deployment of one of our server farms to Amazon EC2. Here are some lessons learned from that experience.
- TechMasala – Technology Spice Rack » Dynamically Scale Web Applications in Amazon EC2 – The white paper assumes Nginx is used for load balancing a web application and Nagios for monitoring the instances. The solution involves dynamically adding a new instance to the Nginx configuration for load balancing and adding the Nagios configuration for monitoring the new instance. It also removes the configurations from Nginx and Nagios when the instance is brought down.
