BotchagalupeMarks for August 27th – 06:20
By John | August 29, 2009
These are my links for August 27th through August 28th:
- I Like The Way You Move: Animoto’s Custom Movie Montages Can Now Include Video – Animoto, the startup that lets you automatically build custom music videos starring your own media, just got even more awesome. Tonight the site is launching support for video, which means you’ll be able to generate customized music videos featuring your home movies, along with photos and music, with almost no effort required. We first previewed the new feature last month, and now the company is opening it to everyone.
- A Look At Facebook’s Reach Worldwide – Everyone knows that Facebook has become absolutely massive, but it’s easy to lose sight of just how big a number like 250 million is. Buzzpoint, a social media marketing firm based out of Los Angeles, has put together an impressive visualization that shows off just how large Facebook has grown. The company has estimated the current and past Facebook usage statistics using available data and plotted a number of graphs tracking its progress over the last three years.
- OpSource launches virtual private cloud, says it’s better than Amazon’s | VentureBeat – OpSource just announced a new product called the OpSource Cloud, which it says will provide the benefits of cloud computing — where the computing takes place remotely, on someone else’s infrastructure — without sacrificing the control and security of traditional IT. Amazon made a similar announcement yesterday, but the startup’s chief executive Treb Ryan claims the OpSource Cloud goes further in addressing the needs of large, enterprise-scale companies.
- Sirius XM’s New $120 ‘SkyDock’ Turns Every iPhone Into A Satellite Radio (SIRI, AAPL) – The SkyDock will be available in the fall for $120. It's an iPhone and iPod touch accessory that plugs into the gadget's base, acting as a car dock, satellite radio antenna, and charging station. When you pop open a free tuner app on your iPhone or iPod, it becomes a satellite radio.
- Terremark Offers SAP Cloud Hosting « Data Center Knowledge – Terremark Worldwide (TMRK) will offer hosting services for SAP solutions on its Enterprise Cloud infrastructure platform, the company said today. The agreement offers expanded options for customers looking for a cloud environment to run business applications from SAP, as the German software giant has been slow in deploying its own cloud platform.
- The Anatomy of Hadoop I/O Pipeline (Hadoop and Distributed Computing at Yahoo!) – In a typical Hadoop MapReduce job, input files are read from HDFS. Data are usually compressed to reduce the file sizes. After decompression, serialized bytes are transformed into Java objects before being passed to a user-defined map() function. Conversely, output records are serialized, compressed, and eventually pushed back to HDFS. This seemingly simple, two-way process is in fact much more complicated due to a few reasons:
- Amazon Web Services Blog: Introducing Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) – Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) lets you create your own logically isolated set of Amazon EC2 instances and connect it to your existing network using an IPsec VPN connection. This new offering lets you take advantage of the low cost and flexibility of AWS while leveraging the investment you have already made in your IT infrastructure.
- Amazon Web Services Blog: FlightCaster – AWS-Powered Flight Delay Prediction – As a frequent traveler, there's nothing more aggravating than a delayed flight. The team at FlightCaster has used AWS to build a powerful tool for travelers. FlightCaster uses the following sources of data to drive its predictions:
- Opscode Blog: Chef Available in Ubuntu Karmic Koala! – Opscode Blog Chef Available in Ubuntu Karmic Koala
We are very excited to announce that Chef packages and related dependencies
have been accepted into Ubuntu's Karmic Koala release! This is a great
milestone …
