Laugh Clown Laugh – The $20 Laptop

By John | February 6, 2009

Maybe I should say – He who laughs first…will also laugh last…and he who laughs last will laugh the best…

It seems that everyone is sort of making fun of this idea of the $20 laptop these days.  They will never do it,  how silly is that?  Folks, the bottom line is that India is working on solving a huge problem and they don’t really care what you think.  Why?  Because Negroponte’s idea of a $100 laptop was an idea looking for an $opportunity$ and the $20 laptop is an idea looking for a solution.  In the end the $20 laptop might be as high as $50 or even $100.  That is not the point. The point is that they, India, are trying to solve a problem and OLPC is <insert suggestion here?> .  When I decided to do the G1G1 last year as a Christmas (2007) present for my boys, a friend of mine told me that he thought Negroponte was a scam artist.  At the time, I got angry with him and scolded him for being a cynic.  However, here we are a year later and all you hear are violin strings from the OLPC folks that Microsoft didn’t do this and Intel did that.  Man up, dude.  Negrponte and his merry band of gangsters where trying to strong arm third world emerging countries into buying millions of OLPC’s and thankfully the good folks in India were not buying “stupid” that day.  They started doing something that the brilliant minds in Camelot (i.e., the Charles river moat) and Washington have still not even figured out how to do.  They started working on a solution to a huge problem (duh, education).  So today, now that we are all laughing about the $20 laptop not really being a laptop, strangely enough, this all reminds me of a great line from a Dylan song – “For the loser now will be later to win”.   And as all the kings’ clowns yuck it up at this perceived $20 laptop FAILWHALE,  hundreds of millions of impoverished children are anxiously waiting for a learning tool that in the next six months will change their life.  Yes Virgina, children who can’t even afford to buy paper will be receiving distributed learning materials for the first time.  You can also bet that those smart folk at Tata, the ones who are selling $1500 cars, will have a laptop version 2 sometime later this year.   Yeah, it might actually wind up costing $100 dollars to get a learning device that has an LCD and keyboard into 100′s of millions of children hands, who cares, it’s worth it (for some).  I am also wondering if all the laughing clowns think it was rude of Putin to tell Dell to go shit in his hat when Micheal Dell asked Putin if Russia needed his help during Davos last week?  People, do you see a trend emerging here?.

However, all this makes me wonder if anyone up in Cambridge or Washington is actually laughing right about now.  It also makes me think of something Doughboy says near the end of John Singleton’s “Boys’ in the Hood”  – “Either they don’t know, don’t show, or don’t care about what’s going on in the hood”.  Hell, I’m no Harvard fellow or MIT grad, but it seems to me that King James and the Cavaliers just took the Celtics down town in the lane and they’re still wondering where the ball is.  Me, for one, I am not laughing.  I am just smiling ear to ear.

I’d suggest that if Indians make a $20 computer, Negorponte has won.

I guess that’s the glass half full view. However, I think they would have figured this out themselves w/o Negroponte. what say you? :)

The news is that they wanted it to be $10 but it is going to be $20. Did you read my article? What will happen? It already has.
