There's a difference between the people who KNOWINGLY purchase a degree and people who get bamboozeled by slick sales reps and sign up for a program they believe legitimate. Unfortunately, they all get lumped into the SAME group and labeled as academic cheats.

With all of the "accrediting institution" it's a shame that good people get taken by bad companies willing to rip people off.

When I was young and dumb (20 years ago, now I'm old and dumb), I investigated an unaccredited university who said they were in the process of getting accredited. I figured that they wouldn't be LYING to me so I applied and got into the program. I took it seriously and sbumitted ACTUAL work and I got an MA in 3 years with a GPA of 3.78. THEN they got into trouble in Hawaii for not having enough Hawaiian residents. Back at the start of the web revolution, online schools couldn't get accredited; they had to have some sort of brick and mortal presence.

I already had an Economics degree from a real school but I still got mind controlled by a slick "admissions counselor" and got taken for a ride.

I did the work with an honest heart and I can't use the degree on my resume for fear of getting labeled as a cheat.

Being ignorant is no excuse and I'm paying for that mistake by having to do another master's degree.

So when you're feeling a little smug and slamming people who have degrees from unaccredited or "questionably accredited" institutions, you might want to cut those people a little slack. In the era of offshoring and outsourcing, people are looking for a way to keep their jobs and they might be a little less thorough in their due diligence when investigating schools.

I know a guy with a PHD from one of those places. Which is .. terribly unfortunate.

He's a bright guy, very personable, sharp at his trade. He'd be an asset anywhere.

I can't suggest he hire on at my employer - they research and they'll find him out. Then what does that make me look like? I can't associate professionally with him, same reason.
