Web Site Improvements
By John | January 31, 2008
Over the last few days, I have been making some small improvements to my site. If you are interested, here are some details:
First off, that guy in the picture is not me. It is Botchagalupe.
A few months ago I had the opportunity to sit down with Mark Hinkle, and he gave a lot of great advice on how to improve my site. I know I say this a lot, but I can’t help it: Mark rocks!
- Like a dope, I had no title, description, or meta tags on my site. The first thing that I did was install the All-in-one-seo-pak Wordpress plugin, which allows you to set your meta tags from the admin panels. It was very easy to install, and setup was a breeze. I also added some other tags in my header.php page (e.g., Author, copyright).
- Next, I finally created a Google analytics account (ain’t I pathetic). I have been blogging for eight months, and I have been too lazy to even setup a Google analytics account. Then, I added the Google analytics Wordpress plugin.
- I also setup a site google sitemap.xml. There is also a Wordpress plugin for this. The sitemap plugin is great because it allows you to manage not only Google but also MS and Yahoo crawlers from the admin panel in Wordpress.
- I also updated my sidebar. I added another Wordpress plugin that creates a category cloud. I just love clouds. I also added a delicio.us sidebar and a feedburner rss icon.
- One of the coolest things that I did was add a plugin called navt. One of the things I really love about Drupal is the ability to create views based on your taxonomy. While I have been learning everything I can about Drupal, I have been really lazy when it comes to learning Wordpress. The fact that Wordpress is so easy to set up and maintain probably enables ignorance (at least for me). Last night, however, I found this plugin that allows me to create custom sidebar navigation options. With this tool, I was able to add a new entry for anyone who wants to talk about “Lost” with me in a way very similar to a Drupal view.
If you have any questions about what I have done, please feel free to contact me at botchagalupe “at” gmail.com
